Badlands et Black Hills
Sans J. donc, je suis parti vers Rapid City. J’étais en contact depuis un petit moment avec A., un couchsurfeur dont le profil me plaisait, un easy going et grimpeur. Je me disais que si j’avais le temps, j’en profiterais pour faire une journée d’escalade… mais la date butoir du prochain film s’approchait dangereusement et je n’avais toujours pas trouvé comment aborder concrètement le fXXXing thème : Dualité.
Arrivé à Rapid City, A. vient me chercher avec The Keeks, sa fille de 12 ans.
Aux premiers mots échangés je sais qu’on va bien s’entendre… Sa voiture, une Subaru, est encore plus pourrie que ma 106 et ceux qui connaissent mon bolide, vous diront que c’est chose rare. Plus pourrie et, en prime, un système automatique de ceinture de sécurité ubuesque que je jalouse encore. Je tombe immédiatement amoureux de ce tas de rouille motorisé où, sous le vitrail fragile du pare-brise blessé, la danse d’une princesse haïtienne épileptique me met en transe.
A. et la mère de The Keeks ne vivent pas ensemble. Elle vit deux rues plus loin avec une autre vie de famille. The Keeks passe d’une maison à l’autre tous les deux jours. Ils n’étaient pas mariés. Ils n’ont pas divorcé. Ils ne sont pas allés au tribunal. J’ai vu une photo du couple et de Keeks lorsqu’elle avait un ou deux mois. Sa mère était une femme magnifique. Elle m’a fait penser à toi, Vio.
Le soir même, nous allons voir le Crazy Horse century’s blast. Crazy Horse c’était lui

et il y a cent ans, le sculpteur Korczak Ziolkowski et Chief Henry Standing Bear ont décidé, à une dizaine de miles du Mount Rushmore, de tailler dans la montagne le grand Crazy Horse sur son cheval.
Il y a des polémiques… évidemment… pour les indiens, ces montagnes sont sacrées… pour d’autres un monument histouristique… il y a la comparaison avec Mount Rushmore… bref… la soirée, c’est une vidéo projection de photos de l’histoire américaine avec des lasers… et de la mauvaise musique… genre « We are proud to beAmerican »… puis les cent explosions ! Le son est époustouflant. Je l’utiliserai plus tard pour faire mon propre mémorial en utilisant une partie de l’immense et sublime travail de Edward S.Curtis – pour moi, le plus grand documentariste et photographe de l’histoire Américaine – Un mémorial vivant et violent à l’image de leur Histoire, avec un morceau de Rien, un talentueux groupe grenoblois, qui a utilisé dans ce morceau intitulé : ” il ne peut y avoir de prédiction sans avenir”, le prêche du Bien contre le Mal de Robert Mitchum (un métis d’Irlandais et d’Indien) dans La nuit du Chasseur. Au niveau dualité, j’avais ce qu’il me fallait…
En Anglais faire un plan, ou faire une “picture” c’est : shoot… comme lorsqu’on tue quelqu’un avec un fusil. D’ailleurs l’ancêtre des caméras c’est le fusil d’Étienne-Jules Marey… 
Je pense à Curtis, lorsqu’il prenait en photo ces indiens… à quoi pensait-il?

Ils ont des chevaux et Keeks trépigne d’impatience pour faire une ballade… je dis trépigne mais, en fait, elle fait plutôt des claquettes… Lorsque The Keeks s’ennuie ou s’impatiente elle se met à faire des pas des claquettes sur place en fronçant les sourcils et ça marche plutôt bien pour faire bouger son monde…

… d’abord petit échauffement et mise au point technique… (je ne suis pas monté sur un cheval depuis une chute traumatisante lorsque j’étais enfant…)
Une heure plus tard l’estomac rempli nous prenons le large, sur les plateaux et les crêtes des Black Hills. La pluie exacerbe les parfums de la prairie… la sauge est enivrante
Journée sublime.
J’ai rendez vous le lendemain avec J. pour une entrevue et une longue balade à cheval…

Ton père vient de m’envoyer l’info sur la possibilité de te suivre pendant cette extraordinaire aventure. Quelle chance tu as de vivre tous ces moments dans cet espace de grande liberté. Tu nous mets l’eau à la bouche. Ca me rappelle ces séjours fantastiques passés dans le Saskatchewan et le Montana chez des cousins de mon mari.
